COLTON, Calif. — A San Bernardino County man is in custody following a violent and high-stakes pursuit through the streets of Colton on Thursday. Authorities say the incident escalated from a routine traffic stop into a life-threatening confrontation when the suspect allegedly attempted to use his vehicle as a weapon against law enforcement officers.
The Colton Police Department identified the suspect as 31-year-old Matthew Vincent Rodriguez, a resident of Colton. The series of events began on March 21, when officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop near the intersection of North Grand Avenue and West Olive Street. Rather than pulling over, Rodriguez reportedly accelerated, sparking a dangerous pursuit through local neighborhoods.
A Dangerous Escalation
According to investigators, the pursuit quickly turned hazardous as Rodriguez demonstrated a “total disregard for public safety.” During the chase, the suspect allegedly maneuvered his vehicle in an aggressive manner, making multiple attempts to ram into Colton police cruisers.
“The suspect’s actions posed an immediate threat not only to our officers but to the community at large,” a spokesperson for the department noted. Despite the suspect’s alleged attempts to disable police vehicles through intentional collisions, officers were able to maintain the pursuit while navigating around the attempted strikes.
Tactical Resolution and Arrest
The pursuit eventually came to a halt after a series of tactical maneuvers by law enforcement. Once the vehicle was stopped, Rodriguez was taken into custody without further incident. While the chase resulted in significant tension and physical risk, no officers or bystanders were reported injured during the duration of the event.
Rodriguez was booked into the San Bernardino County Jail on several felony charges, including assault with a deadly weapon (his vehicle) on a peace officer and felony evading. He is currently being held as investigators review the full scope of the evening’s events and any additional potential charges.
Community Safety
The Colton Police Department continues to investigate the motives behind Rodriguez’s flight and subsequent aggression. They are urging anyone who may have witnessed the pursuit or has video footage of the incident to come forward to assist with the ongoing case.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable dangers faced by law enforcement during traffic enforcement. For now, the streets of Colton remain quiet as the legal process against Rodriguez begins.
